The why is never given and the details all seem a bit fantastical. Neither are a quick and painless death. They tended to use fire, not a pit and a pendulum. And it still exists.

The story is still pretty interesting though, Poe was able to capture and alllan the narrator’s feeling of despair and hopelessness for his internment; the can reader can truly empathize with his suffering from being locked in edggar cold, desolate cell, surrounded by constant reminders of his impending death: At the very beginning they are mentioned briefly.

Now I don’t mean to say there is no drama or suspense but because we seem to know so obviously what is happening even without the obvious reveal in the end it does not reach out and grab like the other stories which is why it does not generate as great in effect with me as the other Poe books I reviewed which is why I will probably review one more “bonus” book just for kicks.
